Court orders release of RSP leader Aranico Pandey on Rs 20,000 bail

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu District Court has ordered the release of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) leader Aranico Pandey on bail of Rs 20,000.

A single bench of District Judge Dhruba Raj Karki issued the order today following Pandey’s statement and the conclusion of arguments in a case related to electronic transactions (cybercrime).

The case was filed by the government prosecutor earlier today, and the court conducted both the statement recording and final arguments on the same day—a rare occurrence, as such proceedings are typically held the day after a case is registered.

Panday, a central committee member of the RSP, allegedly sent obscene and abusive emails to a woman, according to a complaint filed with the Nepal Police Cyber Bureau. Pandey was arrested on August 27 based on the complaint.

The woman, who has requested anonymity under the name Cyber Bureau 13, provided evidence to the police showing that the emails contained offensive language and abusive content that caused her mental distress and harassment.

She has requested legal action under the Electronic Transactions Act and compensation for the trauma endured.

Pandey, also a former member of the National Planning Commission and an employee of the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), reportedly sent offensive messages via Gmail and WhatsApp after she contacted him for advice regarding her son’s interest in studying science. The complaint states that he also made abusive phone calls using derogatory language.
