KATHMANDU: During Friday’s session of the National Assembly, lawmakers raised several concerns, including calls to increase subsidies for sugarcane farmers, improve cross-border trade routes, and address social issues.
Speaking during the zero-hour session, MP Gangakumari Belbase urged the government to continue and enhance subsidies previously provided to sugarcane farmers, noting recent reductions.
MP Gopal Bhattarai called on the government to expedite the reopening of the Tatopani and Rasuwagadhi border points with China, which have been blocked due to floods and landslides. He also highlighted the need to operationalize the Korala border crossing.
MP Jagaprasad Sharma sought updates on the progress of laws related to the investigation of disappeared persons, a year after the legislation was enacted.
MP Tulsakumari Dahal raised concerns over rising incidents of violence against women and urged relevant authorities to take concrete steps to reduce discrimination and abuse.
MP Mayaprasad Sharma criticized the high fees for embossed vehicle number plates and emphasized the necessity of including Nepali characters on license plates.
MP Sharadadevi Bhatt drew attention to the increased risk of seasonal diseases such as dengue, malaria, and cholera during the monsoon.
MP Sumitra Bisi urged the government to diplomatically address the agreement allowing India and China to open trade routes through Nepal’s Lipulekh border.
The day’s agenda also includes oral questions to Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel on matters related to the Ministry of Finance. Tulsakumari Dahal, chair of the Legislative Management Committee, is scheduled to present the committee report on the “National Forensic Science Laboratory (Establishment and Operation) Bill.”
Additionally, Secretary Dr. Surendra Aryal will table the message received from the House of Representatives regarding the “Alternative Development Finance Deployment Bill,” and Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, will propose sending the “Social Media Bill” to the Legislative Management Committee for clause-by-clause review.
