Sudurpaschim CM Shah to seek vote of confidence on July 31

SURKHET: Sudurpaschim Province Chief Minister (CM) Kamal Bahadur Shah is set to seek a vote of confidence in the Provincial Assembly on July 31, following the withdrawal of support from the Nagarik Unmukti Party.

According to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, a meeting of the Nepali Congress parliamentary party held today unanimously decided to back Shah in the upcoming vote. A party whip has been issued directing all NC Provincial Assembly members to vote in his favor.

Despite the Nagarik Unmukti Party’s decision to exit the ruling coalition, the Shah-led government still holds a majority in the 53-member assembly. As per constitutional provisions, the Chief Minister must secure a vote of confidence within 30 days of losing coalition support—by August 2.

The Nagarik Unmukti Party, the fourth-largest party in the Provincial Assembly, holds seven seats. The ruling Nepali Congress leads with 18 members, followed by its coalition partner, the CPN-UML, with 11.

In opposition, the CPN (Maoist Center) also holds 11 seats, while the CPN (Unified Socialist) has four members (with one currently suspended). The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) holds one seat, and there is one independent member.
