Senior citizens to receive allowance only after 70

KATHMANDU: The government has announced that the elderly will be eligible for senior citizen allowances only after reaching the age of 70.

Presenting the budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2025/26 in the Federal Parliament, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel made the announcement as part of broader reforms in the social security system.

Until now, citizens aged 68 and above had been receiving the allowance, but the new provision raises the eligibility age by two years.

The government says the move is aimed at improving the efficiency and sustainability of the state-sponsored social security programs amid increasing fiscal pressures.
