KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has called for Thursday’s public demonstration to be conducted peacefully.
The appeal was made during a discussion held on Wednesday between the Commission and the Chief District Officers and District Police Chiefs of Kathmandu and Lalitpur.
The meeting focused on security measures to be taken in light of the demonstration announced for May 29 by the pro-monarchy forces and the CPN-UML.
NHRC Chairperson Tap Bahadur Magar instructed security officials to uphold peace and order while respecting human rights values in their security arrangements.
The Commission also announced that it would deploy monitoring teams to observe the protest from a human rights perspective.
Magar urged the demonstrators to exercise their right to freedom of expression responsibly, refraining from unnecessary criticism or provocation.
He emphasized the importance of adhering to the provisions of the Constitution as well as national and international human rights standards.
The NHRC also called on the Government of Nepal and concerned security agencies to assess potential risks associated with the demonstration and ensure that peace, order, and the protection of human rights are prioritized.
According to the Chief District Officers and Police Chiefs, efforts have been made to coordinate among all security agencies in the Valley to manage the situation effectively.
Measures have been taken to prevent direct contact between opposing groups to avoid potential clashes.
Special attention is being given to the security of sensitive locations, including media houses, and a security strategy has been prepared to ensure smooth traffic movement and the safety of citizens.
