Protecting a free press requires unity: Prachanda

KATHMANDU: The CPN (Maoist Centre) Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has condemned the recent vandalism and arson carried out by supporters of the former king, stating that such acts are inexcusable.

Speaking at the 5th National Convention of Press Center Nepal today, he urged the government to take strict action against those responsible for damaging public and private property.

“This is the right time for republicans to act against autocratic and criminal-minded forces,” Dahal said. “If the government takes firm action, we will support it. However, if it compromises and gives them room to operate, it will not benefit the country.”

Dahal emphasized that royalists have targeted the free press and called on the entire media sector to unite against forces that seek to push society backward.

“The press, which spreads awareness of progress, peace, and development, has become a target of feudal forces,” he said. “The media must play a crucial role in stopping this authoritarian trend; there should be no delay.”

Highlighting the historical role of journalism in Nepal’s political transformations, he stressed that a stronger press is essential for strengthening the federal democratic republic.

During the event, outstanding journalists and branch offices of the Press Center were honored.

Maoist Centre Vice-Chair Agni Prasad Sapkota reiterated that Nepal is already moving toward socialism, and any attempt to reverse this progress will not be tolerated.

Similarly, the party’s Deputy General Secretary Janardan Sharma urged republican forces to self-reflect, unite against feudalism, and respect public sentiment.

Press Center founder Maheshwar Dahal reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to defending press freedom and freedom of expression.

Leaders from Federation of Nepalis Journalists, Press Union Nepal, and Press Chautari Nepal also spoke, asserting that there is no alternative to a republic and vowing to continue advocating for press freedom and citizens’ rights.
