KATHMANDU: Nepal Police have arrested controversial religious leader Pushkar Khatiwada, who was actively involved in the violent protest in Tinkune on Friday, demanding the restoration of the monarchy.

Khatiwada was taken into custody from Imadol, Lalitpur, on Saturday, police confirmed.

He is known as a spiritual mentor to Durga Prasai, the head of the Joint People’s Movement Committee, who remains at large.

Footage from the protest shows Khatiwada throwing stones at security personnel, intensifying the clashes.

Meanwhile, authorities continue their search for Prasai, who fled the scene after inciting violence.
