KATHMANDU: Martyrs’ Day is being observed across the country today, honoring the martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the nation and the welfare of its people.

The day is celebrated on Magh 16 every year with various programs commemorating the martyrs who gave their lives for the establishment and restoration of democracy and freedom at different times in history.

This day is observed by remembering the struggles and devotion of martyrs such as Shukra Raj Shastri, Dharma Bhakta Mathema, Dasharath Chand, and Ganga Lal Shrestha, as well as the contributions of other martyrs to the establishment of democracy in the country.

Martyrs’ Week is observed from Magh 10 to 16 each year, organized by various non-governmental organizations to honor the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives fighting against the Rana regime.

In 1997, Martyr Shukra Raj Shastri was executed in Teku-based Pachali on Magh 10, Dharma Bhakta Mathema at Shifal on Magh 13, and Ganga Lal Shrestha and Dasharath Chand at Shobha Bhagawati on Magh 15 by the Rana rulers while demanding freedon.
