KATHMANDU: The weather in Bagmati, Madhesh, and Koshi provinces of Nepal is expected to be affected from Thursday to Saturday due to the cyclone ‘Montha’ developing over the Bay of Bengal.
According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, the system is likely to bring moderate rainfall in most parts of Madhesh and Koshi provinces and some areas of Bagmati Province.
The department has also forecast heavy rainfall in one or two areas of Madhesh and Koshi provinces, while light rain is expected in some eastern parts of Gandaki and Lumbini provinces.
As the system intensifies, moderate snowfall is also possible in some high hill and mountainous areas of Koshi and Bagmati provinces, as well as a few high-altitude areas in Gandaki Province. One or two locations in the high hill and mountainous regions of Koshi and Bagmati provinces may experience heavy snowfall.
During this period, the flow in rivers such as Bagmati, Kamala, Koshi, and Kankai and their tributaries is expected to increase significantly, potentially reaching alert levels. Sudden floods may occur in small rivers and streams flowing through the Mahabharat and Chure ranges in Koshi, Bagmati, and Madhesh provinces.
The department has highlighted districts including Kathmandu Valley, Kavre, Sindhupalchok, Dolakha, Makwanpur, Chitwan, Sindhuli in Bagmati; Bara, Parsa, Sarlahi, Rautahat, Mahottari, Dhanusha, Saptari in Madhesh; and Sankhuwasabha, Taplejung, Panchthar, Tehrathum, Bhojpur, Dhankuta, Ilam, Jhapa, Morang, Sunsari in Koshi as areas with high risk of sudden river flooding.
The department has urged all concerned agencies and the public to exercise caution, as the expected rain and snowfall may lead to flash floods, landslides, and disruptions to daily life, road and air transport, agriculture, and tourism.
