Rain and snow likely as low-pressure system hits Nepal

KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has warned that various parts of the country are likely to experience rain and snowfall due to the combined influence of westerly winds and a low-pressure system formed over the Arabian Sea.

According to the Meteorological Forecasting Division, light to moderate rainfall and snowfall are expected today and tomorrow in several areas of Gandaki, Lumbini, and Karnali provinces, as well as a few places in the hilly and mountainous regions of other provinces.

One or two locations in the high hilly and mountainous areas of Gandaki Province may experience heavy snowfall. The Division has cautioned that these weather conditions could affect daily life, mountaineering, agriculture, and tourism in the affected areas. It has urged the general public and concerned authorities to take necessary precautions and stay updated with the latest weather information.

For Tuesday, the weather is expected to be generally cloudy in Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim provinces, including other hilly regions, while the Terai will experience partly cloudy skies. There is a likelihood of moderate rain and snowfall in some areas of Gandaki, Lumbini, and Karnali provinces and a few places in other hilly and mountainous regions.

Heavy rain or snowfall may occur in one or two high-altitude areas of Gandaki Province. During the night, the weather will remain generally cloudy in Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Karnali provinces, with partial cloud cover in the Terai.

Moderate rain or snowfall is possible in Gandaki and nearby hilly regions, and heavy snowfall could occur in high mountain areas of Gandaki.

On Wednesday, the weather is expected to be generally cloudy in Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces, while the Terai will remain partly cloudy. There is a possibility of light rain or snowfall in one or two hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini provinces.

At night, the weather is expected to be partly cloudy across the country, with chances of light rain or snowfall in some hilly and mountainous areas of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki provinces.

Meteorologists have also predicted that rain and snowfall may continue until Saturday due to the partial influence of a cyclone developing over the Bay of Bengal. The system is expected to impact the central and eastern regions of Nepal later this week.
