Janardan accuses Prachanda’s leadership of causing party split

BUTWAL:  CPN (Maoist Centre) Deputy General Secretary Janardan Sharma ‘Prabhakar’ has said that Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’s leadership style was responsible for the split of the then Nepal Communist Party (NCP), which was formed after the unification with CPN-UML.

Speaking at a dialogue program on “Current Political Crisis and Way Forward” organized by the Martyrs and Disappeared Memorial Foundation in Butwal, Sharma said the Maoist party is ready to make any sacrifice for party restructuring, warning that failure to reorganize could lead to a serious crisis.

Sharma’s remarks came in response to Prachanda’s statement in Biratnagar, where the Maoist Centre chair accused Sharma of aligning with interest groups within the party. Prachanda had argued that the Maoist movement would not stop just because “Prabhakar refuses to believe.”

Countering from Butwal, Sharma accused the leadership of treating the party like personal property.

“Restructuring is essential, and communist unification is the need of the hour,” he said, adding that he was willing to sacrifice for party reorganization beyond vested interests. He also pointed to leaders like Netra Bikram Chand and Ghanashyam Bhusal as witnesses to his stance.

Sharma further alleged that Prachanda’s confrontational approach during the dual leadership with KP Sharma Oli in the then-NCP directly contributed to the party’s collapse.

He also criticized the frequent changes in coalition governments under Prachanda’s leadership, saying such decisions had pushed the Maoist party into crisis.

“After the 2022 elections, we had the opportunity to lead the government and had even initiated some work,” Sharma said. “But we ruined it ourselves—like the saying goes, ‘Mangle spoils it in his own way.”

According to Sharma, Prachanda’s constant shift in alliances has left the party unable to address people’s agendas. “Instead, we are now only watching scandals unfold, and we ourselves are responsible for that,” he added.

Earlier in Biratnagar, Prachanda had told reporters that doubts expressed by individuals such as Prabhakar would not stop the party, the movement, or its history.
