PM Oli surprised by former President Bhandari’s opposition to UML

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli has expressed surprise over former President Bidya Devi Bhandari’s stance against the party, the Prime Minister’s Secretariat stated on Tuesday.

The clarification comes after reports circulated online and on social media, allegedly quoting PM Oli as saying, “No one in UML can challenge me except Bidya; if she leaves, everything will be fine.” PM Oli’s Secretariat said that such statements were false, misrepresented, and spread for personal gain.

The remarks were made during an informal meeting on August 27 with delegates representing Kathmandu at the party’s upcoming Second Statutory General Convention. The Secretariat stressed that the meeting was not a training session but a casual discussion.

During the meeting, PM Oli discussed the historical struggles of Nepal’s leftist movement, the damage caused by pursuing personal interests against party welfare, recent central committee decisions, and the government’s ongoing development and good governance initiatives.

Regarding former President Bhandari, PM Oli reportedly expressed his astonishment at her current opposition to the party, saying she had not formally obtained membership but engaged with media and other leaders to enter active politics.

The Secretariat noted that such activities, according to party members, do not support the party’s objectives or internal unity. PM Oli highlighted that the central committee’s decision to grant her membership was made with respect for her and the party’s history, and that leadership within the party is not a matter of personal whims or individual challenges.

The Prime Minister’s Secretariat has urged all concerned not to circulate misleading or false news without verifying the facts.
