Arika Gurung wins gold at Thailand Open Karate as Nepal bags multiple medals



KATHMANDU: Nepali karate star Arika Gurung has won a gold medal at the Thailand Open Karate Championship, defeating Thailand’s Chanakan Khieokham in the senior women’s kumite above 68 kg category.

This victory adds to Gurung’s growing list of achievements after she made history last year by winning a silver medal at the Asian Senior Karate Championship and recently clinched a bronze at the Karate 1 Premier League.

Nepali athletes delivered an impressive performance at the tournament, with several others securing podium finishes. In the U12 boys’ kumite 37 kg category, Sampanna Basnet won a silver medal.

Rajiv Pudasaini claimed third place in the senior men’s 75 kg kumite, while Kritika Adhikari secured bronze in the senior women’s 68 kg. Sabina Shrestha also earned third place in the 55 kg category, and Barsha Budhamagar finished third in the 50 kg category.

Young athletes also made their mark, with Diya Tamang winning bronze in the U14 girls’ 52 kg category. Ashish Harijan took third place in the boys’ 45 kg category, and Prajwal Thapa secured bronze in the U14 boys’ 50 kg kumite.
