PM Oli backs naming and shaming of cyberbullies

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has spoken out against the rising trend of online abuse and toxic behavior on social media, urging society to protect itself from such destructive tendencies.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Oli expressed support for Nepali singers Alina Chauhan and Samikshya Adhikari, who have recently taken a stand against cyberbullying.

Praising their campaign to publicly expose online abusers, he said their approach felt “appropriate” in the current context.

“Trying to look good by blaming and insulting others, or constantly opposing and cursing — these parasitic tendencies must be rooted out to protect society,” Oli wrote. “I believe their method of exposing such trolls is the right way to turn society away from senseless outrage and toward reason.”

The prime minister added that online trolling of individuals trying to contribute positively has become excessive and toxic, but those working for good should not lose courage.

His comments come amid growing concern about cyber harassment, particularly targeting public figures, and reflect a broader call for civil discourse and accountability in Nepal’s online spaces.
