KATHMANDU: Members of Parliament have called on the government to create an environment for community school teachers, who are currently protesting in Kathmandu, to return to their workplaces.
Speaking during an emergency session of the House of Representatives today, lawmakers expressed concern over the clashes that occurred during the teachers’ peaceful protests, condemning the use of force against them and urging the government to stop such excesses.
They also emphasized the urgent need to enact the School Education Act to address teachers’ concerns and facilitate their return to schools.
Janardan Sharma of the CPN (Maoist Center) urged the government to show willingness to address the teachers’ demands.
He strongly condemned Sunday’s incident, where dozens of teachers were injured after police used water cannons and batons against peaceful demonstrators.
Sharma stressed that the state must enact laws to meet teachers’ legitimate demands and implement past agreements reached with them.
Rastriya Swatantra Party MP Sumana Shrestha called for the immediate fulfillment of the teachers’ just demands, highlighting that the ongoing protests are depriving children of their right to education. She also condemned the attacks on journalists covering the protests.
Similarly, Rastriya Prajatantra Party MP Roshan Karki described the police action against teachers as “unfortunate” and urged the government to meet the teachers’ demands. She too condemned the assault on journalists during the protest.
Additionally, Karki raised the issue of resident doctors, demanding that their legitimate grievances be addressed promptly.
CPN (UML) MP Surya Bahadur Thapa Chhetri expressed sorrow over the Sunday incident and stressed the need to prevent similar events in the future. He urged teachers to protest peacefully and security personnel to exercise restraint. He also demanded that the Education Minister brief Parliament on the progress of the School Education Act.
Meanwhile, Tshiring Damdul Lama (Bhote) of the CPN (Maoist Center) highlighted the devastation caused by recent floods in Humla and called for immediate relief and compensation for the victims.
Aam Janata Party MP Prabhu Sah reported that hailstorms, strong winds, and rain had destroyed maize, mangoes, and other crops in Bara, Rautahat, and other districts of Madhesh Province, causing disruptions to electricity and communication services. He urged the government to provide relief to affected farmers and restore disrupted services.
Independent MP Dr. Amaresh Kumar Singh called for managerial reforms at a school in Basbariya, Sarlahi, while MP Ranendra Barali demanded that teachers’ demands be addressed and that discrimination against Dalits be ended.
Additionally, MP Kantika Sejuwal wished a speedy recovery to both the injured teachers and security personnel involved in Sunday’s clashes during the protest in Kathmandu.
