Maoist Centre presses govt for talks with agitating teachers

KATHMANDU: The main opposition party, Maoist Centre, has called on the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with teachers who are peacefully protesting to demand the implementation of the School Education Act, along with other concerns.

In a statement, the party’s vice-chairman and spokesperson, Agni Prasad Sapkota, criticized the government’s handling of the ongoing protests led by the Nepal Teachers’ Federation, which have entered their 26th day today.

He condemned the government’s attempts to suppress the movement instead of addressing the underlying issues.

“The government’s repression of teachers has deeply wounded the dignity of not just the teaching community, but the entire intellectual class,” the statement read.

“This approach reflects extreme negligence and irresponsibility, and stands in direct violation of a Supreme Court order mandating a resolution to the problem.”

Sapkota urged the government to initiate sincere and result-oriented talks with the protesting teachers.

He also demanded that the teachers’ grievances be addressed and a conducive environment be created for them to return to their classrooms promptly.

Additionally, he extended wishes for the speedy recovery of both teachers and media personnel who were seriously injured during Sunday’s demonstrations.
