Kathmandu’s air quality deteriorates to unhealthy levels



KATHMANDU: The air quality in Kathmandu Valley has worsened significantly, reaching an unhealthy level on Friday morning. According to the Department of Environment, the Air Quality Index (AQI) at Shankha Park in Kathmandu was recorded at 200 at 10 am, making it the most polluted area in the valley.

Other locations in the valley also reported alarming AQI levels. The AQI in Bhaktapur reached 190, while Ratna Park recorded 184. Bhaisepati in Lalitpur measured 176, and Khumaltar stood at 172. Beyond the valley, Dhangadhi in Kailali also recorded high pollution levels, with an AQI of 178.

An AQI between 151 and 200 is considered unhealthy for the general population, while levels above 200 are classified as extremely unhealthy. Authorities have advised children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses to take precautions.
