Govt announces subsistence allowance for resident doctors in private medical colleges



KATHMANDU: The government has announced the provision of subsistence allowances for resident doctors studying at the postgraduate level in private medical colleges.

The decision was jointly signed by Minister for Education, Science, and Technology Bidya Bhattarai and Minister for Health and Population Pradeep Paudel on Monday night.

According to the new arrangement, resident doctors in their first year of study will receive at least Rs 25,000, in the second year at least Rs 30,000, and in the third year at least Rs 35,000 as subsistence allowance.

This scheme will come into effect from the academic session 2024/25.

The decision follows the directives of the Medical Education Commission, which held its fifteenth meeting on 9th Mangsir 2081 under the leadership of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.

The responsibility for resolving the subsistence allowance issue for postgraduate resident doctors in private medical colleges was assigned to the Ministries of Education and Health.

The decision is the result of extensive discussions with various stakeholders, and it also mandates that private medical colleges ensure dignified service facilities for resident doctors, in accordance with university regulations, the Nepal Medical Council, and prevailing labor laws.
