Constitutional provisions make party majority difficult: Deuba

CHITWAN: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has remarked that it will be difficult for any single party to secure a majority due to the election-related provisions in the constitution.

Speaking at a memorial event organized by Nepali Congress Chitwan on the occasion of the seventh death anniversary of democracy fighter Gauri Devi Pradhan, Deuba stated that the inclusive and proportional provisions in the current constitution make it unlikely for any one party to achieve a majority.

He emphasized his sole focus on strengthening the Nepali Congress, saying, “I became the president of this party and have served as Prime Minister multiple times because of it. My only objective is to strengthen the party across the country.”

He added that the party would grow stronger if those who do not receive election tickets support the official candidates.

Stating that internal issues must be addressed, President Deuba stressed the importance of unifying the party with sincerity to form a majority government while preserving the constitution.

He also called for following the path laid by Gauri Devi Pradhan and her husband Shyam Krishna Pradhan and completing the tasks they left unfinished. Deuba remembered the Pradhan family as staunch believers in democracy and social service, noting his personal closeness to the family.

At the event, Nepali Congress Central Treasurer Umesh Shrestha said that Congress is the party capable of making Nepal prosperous. He emphasized that if the party is advanced in line with public aspirations and historical values, it will become stronger.

Nepali Congress leader Bimalendra Nidhi stated that alliances can be formed as per need and context. He noted that while a majority might not be possible alone, Congress can emerge as the largest party through strategic alliances.

Leader Dr. Shashank Koirala asserted that a strong Congress is essential for protecting the constitution. He highlighted Gauri Devi Pradhan’s significant contributions to the democratic movement and stressed the need to honor the legacy of such democratic fighters.
