Home Minister resumes talks amid tensions over Pathibhara cable car project

KATHMANDU: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has resumed discussions with Members of Parliament (MPs) from Koshi Province following rising tensions over the proposed cable car project at the Pathibhara temple in Taplejung.

The IME Group’s plan to construct a cable car in the Pathibhara area, known as Mukkumlung by the indigenous communities, has sparked controversy, leading the government to temporarily suspend the project.

On Thursday, Minister Lekhak held talks with MPs representing the Koshi districts in the federal parliament at Singha Durbar. MP Urmila Thebe confirmed the meeting, noting that the discussions did not include representatives from the ‘No Cable Car Group,’ which has been actively protesting the project.

The Home Minister aims to gather feedback from the political leaders before making a final decision on the contentious project. The government has urged the protesting parties to engage in dialogue to resolve the issue.

The Pathibhara area has faced mounting tensions for over a year due to the planned construction, with protests escalating in Kaflepati and Phungling, the district headquarters of Taplejung.

This is the second round of talks led by Minister Lekhak, following an earlier discussion a month ago.
