Camera traps set up to track man-eater tiger in Banke

KATHMANDU: Authorities have launched a search operation for a tiger after a woman was killed in a tiger attack in the Bhagwati Community Forest, Rapti Sonari Rural Municipality-8, Banke.

Manoj Sharma, head of the Rapti Sonari Sub-Division Forest Office in Shamshergunj, stated that four cameras have been installed in the forest area to monitor tiger activity and gather facts about recent wildlife behavior.

“Although the cameras have been operational for a few days, no sightings have been reported yet,” Sharma said.

The forest office has also urged residents living near the forest and the buffer zone of Banke National Park to remain alert and vigilant. The community forest, located near the park, is home to various wildlife, including wild boars, chitals, and deer.

The chairman of the Bhagwati Community Forest, Tikaram Wali, confirmed that the cameras were installed following the fatal attack on 67-year-old Cheti Budha on Wednesday.

Locals have reported that tigers had not previously been seen in the forest, but the area has recently experienced an increase in predatory incidents, including the killing of 10 goats.

The operation aims to track the tiger and ensure the safety of local residents while gathering information to address the emerging threat effectively.
