Minister Kharel says March 5 election will go ahead after meeting Deuba, Oli and Dahal

KATHMANDU: Minister for Communication and Information Technology and government spokesperson Jagadish Kharel said the House of Representatives election scheduled for March 5, 2026, will go ahead after he held meetings with the leaders of the country’s three major political parties on Friday.

Kharel met Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, CPN-UML Chair KP Sharma Oli and Nepal Communist Party coordinator Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ in a single day as part of the interim government’s effort to ensure a conducive environment for the election.

Speaking after the final meeting at Dahal’s residence in Khumaltar, Kharel said the government is confident about holding the election on the announced date.

“After meeting the top leaders of the three major parties, it is clear that the election will be held on March 5,” Kharel said, adding that the government is fully committed to conducting the polls.

According to Kharel, all three leaders said they are not opposed to elections and agreed that the country must move forward by seeking a fresh mandate from the people.

He said Deuba confirmed that the Nepali Congress is prepared to take part in the election, while Oli stressed the need to improve security and create a peaceful environment. Dahal, Kharel added, said there is no alternative to elections and reiterated his party’s readiness to go to the polls.

Kharel said Prime Minister Sushila Karki has shown strong determination to conduct the election on time and that state agencies, including the Election Commission and security bodies, are prepared.

“The government is moving ahead with political dialogue to ensure elections at any cost,” Kharel said.
