National Vigilance Center directs local levels to curb misuse of government vehicles

KATHMANDU: The National Vigilance Center has issued a circular to local governments across the country, instructing them to prevent the misuse of government vehicles.

According to the Center, it has received numerous complaints that chiefs, deputy chiefs, chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of many local levels have been using government vehicles and facilities for personal purposes. Complaints state that officials have been using official vehicles for weddings, bratabandha, funerals, trips and other personal errands, leading to the expenditure of millions on fuel, drivers’ daily allowances and maintenance.

The complaints also mention that officials and representatives in several Himalayan district local governments have been taking kitchen and housing facilities in violation of the law.

These complaints were forwarded to the National Vigilance Center through the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers. Acting on the recommendations of its Complaint Management Committee, the Center issued directives to local levels on November 19.

The Center has instructed all local governments to strictly adhere to the prevailing laws governing the use of government vehicles, facilities and fuel, and to prepare and enforce necessary procedures and standards. It has also directed the concerned ministries overseeing local governments to circulate these instructions and report back to the Center.
