Royalist supporters decry PM Oli’s statement as anti-democratic

KATHMANDU: The Monarchist Joint People’s Movement Committee has strongly condemned Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s recent remarks, calling them “provocative and irresponsible.”

In a statement issued by the committee’s coordinator, Nawaraj Subedi, the alliance expressed serious objection to Oli’s comments made on Monday, stating that they go against the spirit of the Constitution and the principles of democracy.

The committee claims the Prime Minister’s statement was not an opposition to their movement, but rather an incitement aimed at creating public unrest.

“Despite the Prime Minister’s inflammatory remarks, our movement will remain peaceful,” said Subedi in the statement. “Civil disobedience and satyagraha (nonviolent resistance) will define the nature of our protest.”

The committee, which is preparing for a nationwide movement beginning on May 29, says the protest aims to free the country from what it describes as a corrupt system and its leadership. The movement demands the restoration of a constitutional monarchy, abolition of federalism, and re-establishment of Nepal as a Sanatan Hindu state, alongside a crackdown on corruption and promotion of good governance for economic prosperity.

PM Oli had reportedly called on CPN-UML cadres to “occupy Kathmandu” to prevent monarchist forces from taking to the streets — a statement the committee says is a direct threat to citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful protest.

The statement further calls on the public to participate in large numbers in the upcoming protests to resist what it describes as a repressive mindset of the government. “To counter the government’s suppressive intent, we urge all citizens to join the movement in overwhelming numbers,” it reads.
