Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol calls for CIAA to probe corruption in KMC

KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Metropolitan City Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol has publicly questioned the role and silence of the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) amid growing allegations of corruption within the city office.

Speaking at an interaction with journalists on Saturday, Deputy Mayor Dangol urged the CIAA to investigate ongoing corruption allegations made by Kathmandu Mayor Balen Shah against Chief Administrative Officer Saroj Guragain.

“Why is the Authority silent when so many corruption cases arise? The Authority must investigate the metropolis,” she said, expressing concern over the lack of intervention.

She further criticized the selective and incomplete release of footage from the city board meeting, suggesting that such partial disclosures could mislead the public.

“People should not be confused by giving incomplete information,” she stated. “Is there only one person with a corrupt mind or is it organized? This should be investigated. The Authority’s silence is not good.”

‘Kathmandu Tower is unnecessary’

Deputy Mayor Dangol also voiced strong opposition to the controversial Kathmandu Tower project at the old bus park, calling it unnecessary and misaligned with public interest. She emphasized that the land, originally taken from the people to build a bus park, should be used for its intended purpose.

“I have always said people first. The land was taken from the people to build a bus park where Kathmandu Tower is being built,” she said. “It is wrong to erect a building in a bus park and do business. The government should use the land for the same purpose and objective for which it was taken.”

Reiterating her stance, she added, “Kathmandu Tower is not necessary. It has been built without any need. There should be a bus park there.”
