Weekly Stock Review: NEPSE falls 64 points

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) remained active throughout the second week of the Nepali New Year (April 20- 24, 2025), with trading taking place on all five working days. However, despite continuous activity, the market witnessed a persistent downward trend.

Out of the five trading days, NEPSE closed in the red on four occasions, with only one day ending in a gain. By the end of the week, the benchmark NEPSE index had declined by 64.71 points, dropping from 2,722.73 the previous Thursday to 2,658.02. On average, the index fell by 12.94 points per day.

The total turnover for the week stood at Rs 40.98 billion, with a daily average of approximately Rs 8.20 billion. A total of 103.31 million shares were traded over the week, averaging 26.63 million shares per day.

Trading occurred 359,260 times across the week, with a daily average of 71,852 transactions, and around 316 companies traded each day.

On Sunday, the market opened the week on a negative note, declining by 16.68 points to close at 2,706.05, a 0.61% drop. NEPSE fluctuated between a high of 2,731.81 and a low of 2,700.85.

Turnover declined by Rs 2 billion compared to the previous session, with 21.32 million shares traded across 74,045 transactions, involving 328 companies.

On Monday, NEPSE slipped further by 7.75 points to 2,698.30, a 0.28% decrease. The index fluctuated within a 26-point range, reaching a high of 2,716.81 and a low of 2,691.

Despite the fall, trading volume saw a marginal increase, with 21.33 million shares changing hands in 78,678 transactions. A total of 319 companies were traded.

Similarly, on Tuesday, the market continued its losing streak, falling by 9.96 points to close at 2,688.32, a 0.36% dip. The index ranged between 2,707.86 and 2,682.80. Total turnover stood at Rs 8.32 billion, with 22.56 million shares traded across 71,694 transactions, involving 319 companies.

Meanwhile, Wednesday marked the steepest fall of the week as NEPSE plunged by 32.38 points to settle at 2,655.94, a 1.20% drop. The index fluctuated by nearly 40 points throughout the day. A total of 18.47 million shares worth Rs 7.57 billion were traded across 64,140 transactions.

On Thursday, the final day of the week, NEPSE rebounded slightly, gaining 2.08 points to close at 2,658.02, a 0.07% rise. The market saw a fluctuation of 29 points, with the index hitting a high of 2,669 and a low of 2,641.88.

Trading volume also saw a slight recovery, with 19.75 million shares worth Rs 7.88 billion traded across 70,703 transactions, involving 308 companies.

Despite active trading, the market experienced a clear bearish sentiment throughout the week, ending with a cumulative loss of over 64 points.

While the trading volume remained relatively stable, the consistent decline suggests cautious investor sentiment heading into the third week of Baisakh.
