Speaker holds discussions as House deadlock over Ghising’s dismissal continues

KATHMANDU: Speaker Devraj Ghimire has initiated discussions with ruling and opposition leaders after the House of Representatives was disrupted over the dismissal of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Managing Director Kulman Ghising.

The opposition, including the CPN-Maoist Center, obstructed the session on Wednesday, demanding a response from Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Speaker Ghimire adjourned the meeting for 30 minutes and has since been holding talks with chief whips and representatives from both sides in an effort to restore order. However, the discussions have yet to yield a breakthrough.

UML MP Padam Giri stated that opposition lawmakers have taken a firm stance, insisting that the House cannot proceed unless Prime Minister Oli personally addresses Ghising’s removal. They argue that the government’s decision was politically motivated, targeting a widely respected figure who played a crucial role in ending load-shedding.

With the deadlock persisting, Prime Minister Oli remains undecided on whether to attend the House session following a meeting of ruling parties in Baluwatar or to proceed with his scheduled address at the National Volunteer Gathering. Speaker Ghimire’s ongoing efforts to mediate have yet to find common ground, leaving the fate of the parliamentary session uncertain.
