Opposition parties stall parliament over Kulman Ghising’s dismissal; PM Oli holds ruling party meeting

KATHMANDU: The opposition parties, including the Maoist Center, have obstructed the House of Representatives, demanding an explanation for the government’s controversial dismissal of Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Managing Director Kulman Ghising.

The opposition claims the move is politically motivated, targeting a leader who played a crucial role in ending Nepal’s power crisis.

The opposition has vowed not to let the House function until Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli provides an answer regarding Ghising’s removal. As tensions rise in the parliament, Speaker Devraj Ghimire was forced to adjourn the session for 30 minutes after opposition lawmakers surrounded the House.

While the parliament remains in deadlock, Prime Minister Oli is engaged in discussions with ruling party leaders in Baluwatar.

The meeting includes top political figures such as JSP Nepal Chair Upendra Yadav, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, Janamat Party Chair CK Raut, Nagarik Unmukti Party Chair Ranjita Shrestha Chaudhary, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party Chair Mahantha Thakur, and JSP Chair Ashok Rai.

According to the Prime Minister’s Secretariat, the ruling coalition is discussing the withdrawal of the Land Ordinance and strategizing on moving forward with a new bill. The meeting also aims to chart the government’s next steps amid mounting opposition pressure.

The political deadlock continues as opposition parties remain firm in their stance, demanding transparency over the removal of the NEA chief, while the government pushes ahead with its legislative agenda.
