Congress consults legal experts on ordinance

KATHMANDU: The ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has sought advice from legal experts regarding recent amendments made through ordinances.

During a parliamentary party meeting held on Sunday in New Baneshwor, the NC invited three senior advocates for consultation on the contents and implications of the ordinances.

Chief Whip of the Congress Parliamentary Party, Shyam Ghimire, stated that senior advocates, including Semanta Dahal and Pratap Poudel, were present to provide insights.

“They explained the necessity of issuing ordinances, their provisions, and potential issues arising from them,” Ghimire said.

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s government had issued five ordinances, with cabinet approval, during the last week of Poush. Four of them were issued on Poush 29, followed by a land-related ordinance two days later. An additional ordinance had already been issued earlier.

The ordinances have drawn criticism from opposition parties and even some leaders within the Congress. Several leaders from the party’s establishment faction have expressed opposition to the ordinances.

Meanwhile, party president Sher Bahadur Deuba, general secretaries Bishwa Prakash Sharma and Gagan Thapa, and Congress ministers in the government have remained silent on the matter.

Among the ordinances, the land-related amendment has sparked significant controversy. The opposition has accused Prime Minister Oli of attempting to distribute land to party supporters under the guise of legal reforms.
