Digitization of citizenship records underway in Nawalparasi

NAWALPUR: Over 9,000 people in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat-Susta East) have applied for national identity cards in the first three months of the current fiscal year 2025/26, according to the District Administration Office.

Assistant Chief District Officer Madhav Prasad Sharma said the number of applicants for national ID cards exceeds those applying for new citizenship certificates or electronic passports.

From August to September, details of 9,315 individuals — including 5,408 women and 3,907 men — have been collected for national ID cards.

The rush, Sharma said, follows the government’s decision to make the national ID mandatory for opening bank accounts and accessing various government services. The registration process is ongoing at the District Administration Office in Kawasoti.

During the same period, 1,871 people obtained new citizenship certificates, while 3,412 residents received electronic passports. Of those obtaining citizenship, 959 were women and 882 were men. Likewise, 1,949 men, 1,345 women, and 121 minors received e-passports, mainly for foreign study, employment, and travel.

Sharma said the administration is expediting passport processing and forwarding applications to Kathmandu promptly. Meanwhile, 2,579 individuals — including 1,331 men and 1,248 women — have received duplicate citizenship copies so far. He added that citizenship records of around 500 district residents have already been scanned and digitized as part of the ongoing effort to modernize documentation.
