PM Karki: Govt. not mandated to change governance system, discusses possibility of overseas voting

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Sushila Karki has said that changing Nepal’s governance system does not fall under the jurisdiction of the current government. She clarified that any amendment, if deemed necessary, should be pursued through the constitutional process.

At a time when some Gen Z protesters have been demanding a directly elected executive system, the Prime Minister, in her address to the nation on Thursday, made it clear that such a shift cannot be undertaken by her government.

“The amendment of the governance system lies beyond the scope of the current government, so I call for pursuing it only through the constitutional process,” she said, adding that her primary focus remains on conducting the upcoming elections.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Karki also said discussions are underway regarding the possibility of allowing Nepali citizens working abroad to cast their votes from overseas.

“The Government of Nepal is holding talks with the Election Commission on enabling Nepali citizens living abroad for employment opportunities to vote from overseas,” she stated.

She further assured that the government is committed to safeguarding the rights of migrant workers and addressing constitutionally valid concerns raised by non-resident Nepalis.

“I urge all citizens to actively participate in the upcoming elections and to help select capable representatives with enthusiasm,” the Prime Minister added.
