Baburam Bhattarai resigns as Chair of Nepal Samajbadi Party

KATHMANDU: Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, former Prime Minister and chairperson of the Nepal Nepal Samajbadi Party (Naya Shakti), has announced his resignation from the party’s top post.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday,Bhattarai said he stepped down to make way for a new generation to take the country’s political leadership, acknowledging the need for generational transition in political parties.

“Generational change within political parties is inevitable. I have resigned from the chairmanship to clear a path for the youth and the New Force, but I will continue to support the mission of alternative power-building and social transformation,” he said.

Bhattarai also expressed support for the Gen-Z youth movement, describing it as a legitimate push for good governance, while noting that some leaders and external actors had attempted to discredit it. Referencing calls for accountability against corrupt leaders, he said, “It is necessary for the youth to create nationwide pressure so that anyone involved in corruption is held accountable under the law.”

He further urged that constitutional amendments should be made to establish a directly elected executive, warning that without reforms in the electoral and governance system, the country could face further complications.

Bhattarai said the upcoming House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5 should include institutional participation and allow Gen-Z youth to play a meaningful role in the nation’s leadership.
