Nepal’s trade deficit expands in first month of FY 2025/26



KATHMANDU: Nepal’s trade data for the first month of fiscal year 2025/26 reveals a widening trade deficit, which rose by around 2.55% compared to the same period last year.

Imports surged by approximately 11.42%, reaching around Rs. 14.3 trillion, up from Rs. 12.8 trillion in the first month of the previous fiscal year. Major imported items included mineral fuels and oils, animal and vegetable fats, iron and steel, and vehicles—reflecting changes in both consumer demand and industrial needs.

On the export front, Nepal recorded Rs. 23.93 billion in export earnings during the month of Shrawan, with leading contributors being animal and vegetable fats and oils, man-made staple fibres, carpets and textile floor coverings, and coffee, tea, and spices.

Exports saw a significant boost—rising by about 95.75% from Rs. 12.22 billion recorded during the same month last fiscal year.
