BIRGUNJ: Petroleum products worth Rs 122.2 billion have been imported through the Birgunj border point in the first eight months of the current fiscal year (2024/25), marking a significant rise compared to the same period last fiscal year.
According to the Birgunj Customs Office, petroleum imports increased by Rs 1.67 billion compared to the previous fiscal year’s corresponding period, which saw imports worth Rs 120.53 billion.
The imported petroleum products include diesel, petrol, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), aviation turbine fuel (ATF), and kerosene.
Chief Customs Administrator Deepak Lamichhane attributed the rise in imports to the ongoing infrastructure development activities.
He noted that the revenue from petroleum imports also saw a boost, with Rs 50.13 billion collected in the current fiscal year, compared to Rs 44.80 billion in the previous year.
The customs office reported that 685,991 kiloliters of diesel worth Rs 61.45 billion were imported in the current fiscal year, generating Rs 27.31 billion in revenue.
Similarly, 290,382 kiloliters of petrol worth Rs 25.30 billion were imported, resulting in the collection of Rs 16.48 billion in revenue. A total of 210 million kilograms of LPG worth Rs 24.05 billion has also been imported, generating Rs 4.5 billion in revenue.
In the eight months of the previous fiscal year, 186.81 million kilograms of LPG worth Rs 19.52 billion were imported, according to the customs office.
Chief Lamichhane said the growing demand for petroleum products is primarily driven by infrastructure construction activities.
