Judges’ Society condemns Dinesh Tripathi’s public criticism of judiciary

KATHMANDU: The Judges’ Society of Nepal has expressed serious concerns over statements made by senior advocate Dinesh Tripathi, claiming they spread distrust in the judiciary, and also condemned the recent assault on him outside the Kathmandu District Court.

Tripathi was attacked on January 2 by alleged supporters of the Rastriya Swatantra Party as he left the court after a closed-door hearing on a fraud and organized crime case. While condemning the physical attack, the Judges’ Society criticized Tripathi for his subsequent comments in media interviews, which they say undermine the judiciary’s integrity.

In a statement issued by its General Secretary, Tek Narayan Kunwar, the association denounced the physical attack on Tripathi, asserting that such actions are unacceptable.

“Physical attacks on members of the Nepal Bar, which is an integral part of the justice delivery process, are condemnable. We demand necessary legal action against those involved,” the statement read.

However, the Society expressed discontent with Tripathi’s media remarks following the incident, which allegedly accused the presiding judge in the case of acting maliciously.

“A senior advocate, instead of addressing his concerns through the legal process, gave interviews alleging malice by the judge simply because the outcome did not favor him,” the statement said.

It added that such actions contravene the ethical standards expected of legal professionals and could lead to public distrust in the judiciary.

The Judges’ Society urged that any grievances with judicial decisions should be resolved through legal channels, not public accusations. T

hey emphasized the importance of maintaining public confidence in the judiciary and regretted Tripathi’s statements, which they believe could harm the institution’s credibility.
