Imports and exports through Birgunj checkpoint rise sharply

BIRGUNJ: Both imports and exports through the Birgunj checkpoint, Nepal’s largest trade gateway, recorded significant growth in the first month of the current fiscal year.

According to the Birgunj Customs Office, goods worth Rs 68.17 billion were imported through the checkpoint in Shrawan (mid-July to mid-August). This marks an increase of Rs 8.11 billion compared to the same period in the previous fiscal year, when imports stood at Rs 60.06 billion.

Exports also saw a remarkable rise. In Shrawan of the current fiscal year 2025/26, exports worth Rs 8.45 billion were recorded, a substantial jump from Rs 3.05 billion during the same month of the last fiscal year.

Revenue collection also increased alongside the surge in trade. The customs office collected Rs 18.44 billion in revenue this Shrawan, up from Rs 15.92 billion collected during the same month in 2081/82.

Officials said the growth in both imports and exports reflects improving trade activities at the country’s busiest customs point.
