KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has pledged to work at a war footing to resolve the drinking water and irrigation crisis in the Tarai-Madhes region.
Responding to questions raised by lawmakers in Wednesday’s session of the House of Representatives, Prime Minister Oli informed that the Cabinet, in its meeting held earlier the same day, had declared Madhes Province a natural disaster-affected area. He assured that the government would mobilize all available resources to ensure access to drinking water and irrigation.
“This government is prepared to confront the challenges facing the nation. Our commitment is to move forward by ensuring political stability,” said Oli. “While the hill regions are dealing with rain and flooding, Tarai-Madhes is suffering from drought. The government has already taken necessary steps to address these issues.”
He added that the declaration of a disaster-affected zone would make it easier to carry out necessary interventions, including deep boring for water. “The government is taking this seriously. Both short-term and long-term solutions will be explored, and no effort will be spared in addressing the crisis,” he stated.
