Raghuji Pant to become Education Minister, swearing-in scheduled for Thursday afternoon

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is set to appoint a new Minister of Education, following the resignation of UML leader and former minister Bidhya Bhattarai.

After deciding on the new appointment, the Prime Minister’s Office has contacted the Office of the President, Sheetal Niwas, to arrange for the swearing-in ceremony.

Bhattarai stepped down on Monday amid the ongoing teachers’ protest, which has now entered its 20th day.

In her place, Prime Minister Oli is preparing to appoint UML leader and proportional representative lawmaker Raghuji Pant as the new Education Minister.

According to sources, the Prime Minister personally called Pant on Tuesday, asking him to be ready for the new responsibility. However, Pant refrained from confirming the appointment, stating, “I haven’t received any official information yet. If that’s the case, I’ll be informed.”

The PM’s Secretariat has confirmed that the decision to appoint Pant has been finalized. He is scheduled to take the oath of office and secrecy at 4 PM on Thursday at the President’s Office in Sheetal Niwas.

Ramsharan Bajgain, a member of the PM’s Secretariat, confirmed the plan to appoint Pant as the Education Minister and said preparations for the swearing-in ceremony are underway.

Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal has already contacted Sheetal Niwas on Wednesday to ensure arrangements are in place for the ceremony.
