KATHMANDU: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has clarified that there are no issues in running the current government.
Speaking at a meeting with journalists today, he addressed concerns regarding power-sharing, following the resignation of the Education Minister and the appointment of the governor, urging that there should be no doubts.
“There is no issue in the government. A member of the search committee formed to recommend the governor resigned. We will complete this process and move forward. We will discuss it in the next cabinet meeting and finalize it,” he said in response to a media query.
The Home Minister emphasized that maintaining strong peace and security, a competent home administration, and well-resourced security agencies remain his top priorities. He also mentioned his commitment to advancing legal and policy reforms.
Minister Lekhak stressed that good governance cannot be achieved without policy reforms.
He informed that the Nepal Police Act and Armed Police Force Act have reached the parliamentary committee for discussion. The ministry is also preparing amendments to the Land Acquisition Act, Organization Registration Act, and Social Welfare Act.
He added that the Hajj and Citizenship Regulations have been submitted to the Council of Ministers, and the Prisons Regulations will be presented in the Council today. Other significant laws will soon be presented to Parliament.
Regarding immigration, Minister Lekhak mentioned that standards are being developed to improve the immigration administration, and service delivery at Tribhuvan International Airport has improved recently.
While acknowledging possible shortcomings in the performance of subordinate bodies, he assured that the government will learn from these and improve. He encouraged the media to provide constructive criticism, as it plays an essential role in democracy.
Minister Lekhak also confirmed that an investigation is underway regarding the violent protest by a pro-monarchy group in Tinkune, Kathmandu, on March 28.
He clarified that the police are conducting an internal investigation into the methods used to maintain security.
“A comprehensive investigation is underway, and the police will thoroughly and impartially get to the bottom of the incident. We are also preparing to provide relief to the families of those who lost their lives in the protest,” Minister Lekhak concluded.
