‘Cross Border Tourism Council’ set to be formed to boost Nepal–India tourism

NEPALGUNJ: A joint platform named the ‘Cross Border Tourism Council’ is set to be formed with the objective of exploring new possibilities in the tourism sector between Nepal and India.

The decision was taken during a three-day Cross Border Tourism Conclave held in Nepalgunj. Former President of the Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA), Banke Chapter, Shriram Sigdel, said the council would be established to promote tourism in both countries.

“Some key issues still need further dialogue. After that, the council will be formally announced,” Sigdel said.

He informed that it could take three to six months to formally set up the council. He also said the government has been urged to introduce an online application and permit system to facilitate cross-border tourism.

During the conclave, participants also decided to lobby the governments of both Nepal and India to operate direct Nepalgunj–Delhi flights by utilizing Nepalgunj Airport to its full capacity for tourism promotion. Sigdel said there was also emphasis on promoting Nepalgunj as a ‘destination wedding’ hub by advocating with relevant authorities.

Organized by the Nepal Tourism Board and coordinated by the NATTA Banke Chapter, the conclave featured a range of activities. These included visits to major tourist sites on the first day, observation of rural tourism initiatives such as homestays on the final day, and a safari in Banke National Park. Business-to-business (B2B) interactions between tourism entrepreneurs and tour operators from both countries were also held.

Meanwhile, a joint meeting of Nepali and Indian tourism entrepreneurs was organized. The meeting decided to initiate efforts, through coordination with the Chief District Officer and security agencies, to ensure a tourist-friendly environment for visitors entering Nepal through the Jamunaha border point. The initiative will be facilitated by the NATTA Banke Chapter, Sigdel said.
