DHARAN: The eastern section of the suspension bridge connecting Yayokha Tole of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City-14 and Kirat Basti of Dharan Sub-Metropolitan City-4 has been damaged due to flooding in the Seuti River following continuous rainfall.
Built in 2057/58 BS at a cost of Rs 5 million, the bridge is considered vital for daily access to Dharan Bazaar. Rajan Chamling, Ward Member of Dharan-4, said the floodwaters from prolonged rains on the 28th, 29th, and 30th of Shrawan damaged the eastern structure of the bridge.
During an on-site inspection, Koshi Provincial Assembly Member Ramesh Basnet, UML Koshi Province Member Rajendra Rai, Central President of the Nepal Transport Independent Workers’ Organization Bhimjwala Rai, and others assessed the damage. Ward Member Chamling stated that concerned authorities have been urged to carry out immediate repairs and ensure safe passage.
According to him, if a wire-mesh embankment had been constructed earlier, the damage could have been prevented. Efforts are now underway to build the necessary protective structures to save the bridge.
“We have also requested support from the District Administration Office,” he said, adding that precautionary measures are being taken to prevent further damage, with risk reduction now a top priority.
