Two, including rural municipality chair, in police custody

SIRAHA: The police have taken Aurahi Rural Municipality Chair Shivaji Yadav and former ward chair and Janamat Party leader Dilip Yadav into custody on Friday evening in connection with a caste-based discrimination incident involving a Dalit family.

The Dalit family’s home was reportedly demolished in the name of organizing a Mahayagya in Aurahi.

According to Madhesh Province Police Chief and Deputy Inspector General of Police Lalmani Acharya, the two individuals have been taken into custody for investigation. Further action will be taken after receiving a complaint from the victim’s side.

On March 20, the house of Deepak Malik (Dom) from ward no. 4 of Aurahi Municipality was demolished to make way for the Mahayagya. Chair Yadav reportedly took a JCB from the rural municipality to demolish the house. After the demolition, the soil from the land where the house stood was also removed, leading to strong protests alleging caste-based discrimination.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Home Affairs has summoned Siraha’s Chief District Officer, Basudev Dahal, on Friday for not responding appropriately to the incident.

The National Human Rights Commission and the National Dalit Commission have also begun investigations, conducting a field monitoring of the situation.

The incident was also strongly addressed in the House of Representatives on Friday, where lawmakers called for the formation of a parliamentary inquiry committee and urged the government to take immediate action against the perpetrators.
