Prithvi Highway expected to reopen by evening

KATHMANDU: Authorities are working to reopen the Prithvi Highway by this evening after it was blocked for over 40 hours due to landslides along the Muglin-Narayanghat section.

With thousands of passengers stranded during the Dashain travel rush, the Department of Roads has expedited efforts to clear debris and restore traffic flow.

According to Prabhat Kumar Jha, spokesperson for the Road Department, the Muglin-Narayanghat section is the most critical bottleneck currently. “We are working to reopen this stretch by this evening, provided there is no heavy rainfall,” he said.

Jha also mentioned that efforts are underway to clear the Araniko Highway — another major route affected under the Prithvi Highway network. “If the weather remains favorable, we expect to clear the Araniko Highway within three days,” he added. “Our goal is to prevent Dashain travelers from being stranded on the highways.”

As per the latest update from the Department of Roads, 10 national highways remain fully blocked. These include: Prithvi Highway, Araniko Highway, Thori–Bhandara–Malekhu Road, Galchhi–Trishuli–Betrabati–Mailung–Syafrubensi–Rasuwagadhi, Rani–Biratnagar–Itahari–Dharan–Dhankuta–Hile, and Leguwaghat–Tumlingtar–Khandbari–Num–Kimathanka (Koshi Highway).

Additionally, 168 roads across the country are currently being operated in one-way mode due to partial obstruction.
