Baglung–Sigana–Bareng road reopens after weeklong closure

BAGLUNG: The Baglung–Sigana–Bareng–Shantipur road, which had been closed since September 14 due to a massive landslide, has reopened after seven days, restoring travel access for local residents and commuters.

A large landslide from above the road in Sigana, Baglung Municipality-8, had buried a cowshed and severely damaged a section of the road, displacing one family. The presence of heavy rocks made the clearance process especially difficult, delaying the reopening.

With the debris now cleared, vehicular movement has resumed, and passengers are once again able to travel to their destinations.

The road had been blacktopped up to 10 kilometers from Baglung Bazaar to Sigana under the government’s ‘One Constituency, One Road’ program. The blacktopping contract had been awarded to Karna Villards by the Road Division Office, Baglung.

According to Raju Khadka, Deputy Mayor of Baglung Municipality, the road was brought back into operation with the joint effort of the municipality, the Road Division Office, and construction contractors.

“A dead buffalo was recovered from the cowshed that was buried by the landslide,” Khadka said.

He added that the municipality, with support from the municipal police, used bulldozers to help relocate household belongings from the damaged homes immediately after the incident.

The landslide debris was cleared over the course of five consecutive days using excavators, coordinated by the Road Division Office.

Locals have welcomed the swift reopening of this vital roadway, especially ahead of the festive travel season. However, concerns remain over the recurring landslide risks in the area, and residents are calling for long-term mitigation measures.
