Kalinchowk: Monsoon retreat in the hills of Dolakha (Photos)

DOLAKHA: Nestled in the hills of Dolakha, a mountainous district rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage, Kalinchowk remains one of Nepal’s most popular religious and tourist destinations.

With dozens of scenic sites and immense tourism potential, Kalinchowk continues to attract visitors throughout the year.

Located 133 kilometers from Kathmandu and just 18 kilometers from the district headquarters, Charikot, Kalinchowk transforms with the seasons. Even during the rainy season, it presents a unique charm—lush green hills, blooming wildflowers, and herds of cattle grazing peacefully under the open sky.

During this season, both domestic and international tourists flock to Kalinchowk to enjoy its monsoon beauty. The vibrant greenery and colorful flowers offer a striking contrast to the area’s winter landscape, when it is blanketed in snow.

In the nearby Kuri area, visitors—many from neighboring India—come not only for the scenery but also to savor local delicacies such as fresh cow milk, chhurpi (hardened cheese), ghee, and sergem (fermented dairy).

This is also the time when high-altitude herbs like padmachal bloom in the forests. Many visitors arrive in search of these valuable medicinal plants, adding another layer to the region’s allure.

Kalinchowk is especially popular among young travelers, who often visit during holidays and vacations.

With dozens of hotels offering comfortable accommodations, Kalinchowk serves as a convenient getaway for tourists from across Nepal and India, many of whom arrive as part of organized package tours.
