Starvation and shortages kill hundreds in Gaza as blockade enters 80th day

GAZA: The Government Media Office in the Gaza Strip has reported that 326 Palestinians have died over the past 80 days due to an Israeli-imposed blockade that has severely limited access to food, medicine, and fuel.

According to the report, 58 individuals died from malnutrition, while 242 others—among them 26 kidney patients—died as a result of critical shortages in food and medical supplies. The blockade has also led to 300 miscarriages among pregnant women.

The report, released Tuesday, denounced the worsening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, accusing Israel of employing systematic starvation tactics. It warned that the blockade, which began after the breakdown of a ceasefire agreement, threatens the lives of over 2.4 million people living in the besieged enclave.

Since March 2, 2025, not a single humanitarian aid or fuel truck has been permitted entry into Gaza, despite an urgent need for at least 44,000 aid trucks over that period, according to the media office. All border crossings remain closed, a move the office called a blatant violation of international law and humanitarian standards.

Describing the situation as “catastrophic in every sense of the word,” the media office called on the international community, the United Nations, and humanitarian and human rights organizations to take immediate action. It demanded the reopening of all crossings and the delivery of essential food, medicine, and fuel—estimating the daily requirement at 500 aid trucks and 50 fuel trucks to sustain vital services.

The statement also urged the International Criminal Court and global legal bodies to fulfill their moral and legal duties by prosecuting Israeli leaders as war criminals and taking steps to end what it described as massacres and inhumane violations.

Since resuming its military offensive on March 18, Israeli forces have carried out airstrikes across Gaza, reportedly killing and injuring over 12,000 Palestinians.
