Agitating teachers hand over man to police for disrupting protest

KATHMANDU: A man was taken into custody and handed over to police by protesting teachers on Monday, following an alleged intrusion and disruption during their demonstration.

Teachers staging a protest march from Maitighar Mandala to New Baneshwor detained an individual who had reportedly entered the protest and began shouting slogans and making statements against the demonstrators.

According to witnesses, the man accused teachers—particularly those with ties to private schools—of undermining public education and using the protest to serve private interests.

This led to a tense confrontation, with some teachers reportedly pushing and attempting to assault him before ultimately handing him over to the police.

The man identified himself as Saroj Mahat, a resident of Godavari Municipality in Lalitpur.

He claimed to be the father of a student enrolled at Saraswati Secondary School and said he had joined the protest to voice concerns on behalf of guardians affected by school closures caused by the protest.

Mahat alleged that the ongoing teacher protests were benefiting private schools while harming public school students.

The situation grew more heated after the man was taken into custody, with the protest briefly escalating in response to the police intervention.
