Education Minister Bhattarai resigns amid ongoing teachers’ protest

Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, Bidhya Bhattarai, has resigned from her post. She submitted her resignation letter to Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Monday afternoon.

The resignation comes at a time when community and government school teachers from across the country have been protesting in Kathmandu for the past 20 days. The protest is centered around demands related to the School Education Act and other concerns.

Sources from the Prime Minister’s Secretariat confirmed that Bhattarai’s resignation has been officially received.

One of three boys missing in Danav River found dead, search continues for others

The body of one of the three boys who went missing while swimming in the Danav River in Rupandehi has been recovered, while two others remain missing as of the time of reporting.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Suraj Karki, spokesperson for the District Police Office, the body of 14-year-old Rajan Yadav was found near the spot where he had drowned.

The three boys from Sano Ardauli in Lumbini Cultural Municipality-2 had gone to the nearby river to swim. A local eyewitness, a friend of the victims, informed Ward Chair Enamullah Fakir that the boys were swept into a deep section of the river near the Baghaha Baba temple while bathing.

Suspicious transactions linked to Durga Prasai’s bank account; Supreme Court grants interim relief

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) has launched an investigation into suspicious financial transactions linked to the bank accounts of Durga Prasai, who has recently been active in campaigns advocating for a Hindu state and the return of monarchy.

According to officials, Nepal Rastra Bank flagged irregularities in Prasai’s bank transactions and referred the matter to the CIB for investigation. Acting on the referral, the CIB obtained approval from the Kathmandu District Court to detain Prasai for questioning.

Prasai was arrested on Chaitra 28 following a violent royalist demonstration in Kathmandu’s Tinkune area and is currently in custody at the Kathmandu District Police Office.

Discontinue non-performing projects: NPC to Finance Ministry

The National Planning Commission (NPC) has advised the Ministry of Finance to significantly scale back or discontinue non-performing and troubled projects, citing the likelihood of resource constraints in the upcoming fiscal year 2082/83 BS (2025/26).

In a report prepared following discussions on budget formulation policies and programs for the coming fiscal year, the NPC warned of mounting pressure on sectors with mandatory obligations and stressed the need to halt projects that are deemed ineffective or problematic.

Teachers’ protest enters 20th day, commuters face worsening traffic disruptions

The nationwide protest by school teachers has entered its 20th day, with demonstrations continuing in the Maitighar to New Baneshwor stretch—one of the busiest corridors of the Kathmandu Valley.

Although the protests have remained peaceful, they have created major disruptions in traffic management. Daily commuters are experiencing route diversions, prolonged congestion, and significant delays, particularly during peak hours. Students, office-goers, and business owners are among those most affected by the ongoing traffic chaos.

PM Oli calls on teachers to immediately sit for talks and go back to work

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has called on the agitating teachers to immediately sit for talks and return to school since the State shall address their demands that the country’s coffers can afford and that are feasible.

Inaugurating the 11th National Conference of the Progressive Professors’ Organization, Nepal in Kirtipur today, PM Oli said that the present government is democratic and not oppressive; therefore, the legitimate demands of the professional sector would be addressed including protecting the rights of trade unions.

“The School Education Bill is under consideration of a parliamentary committee. So many teachers need not hit the street to bring the Act. The school enrollment campaign has already begun. Please go to school and carry out student enrollment. Check the answer sheet of SEE. Don’t be offended by my statement that 52 per cent students have been made to fail in SEE. Work for quality education,” PM Oli said.

Four die in tractor accident in Kalikot

A tractor accident in Palanta, Kalikot has resulted in the deaths of four individuals.  The vehicle was transporting food grains from Thirpu in Palanta-9 when it plunged off a cliff near Larfa village in Palanta-2.

The incident occurred around 11 p.m., according to local authorities. The victims have been identified as Amma Shahi (32) of Palanta-5, Sadu Budha (38) of Palanta-4, Rabindra BK (23), and the driver, Chandra Prakash Rokaya, from Khatyad Rural Municipality-5 in Mugu district.

Four killed as jeep catches fire en route to Pathibhara pilgrimage

Four people were killed early Monday morning when a Bolero jeep en route to the Pathibhara Temple caught fire after reportedly coming into contact with a fallen electric wire.

The incident took place around 4:50 a.m. on the Kaflepati road section of Phungling Municipality-10, near the areas of Gundre and Tersai, according to police.

The jeep, which had departed from Phungling Bazaar, was carrying pilgrims from Lalitpur to the famous pilgrimage site.

Dr. Bhattarai criticizes govt and teachers for jeopardizing students’ future

Former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has sharply criticized both the government and the protesting teachers, warning that their actions are putting the education of nearly five million students at risk. In a social media statement, Dr. Bhattarai condemned both parties, calling their behavior during the ongoing teachers’ protest deeply disappointing and unacceptable.

Habeas Corpus hearing in Rabi Lamichhane case deferred

The Supreme Court (SC) has deferred the hearing of the habeas corpus petition filed on behalf of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane, who is currently in judicial custody in connection with the Supreme Cooperative fraud case.

The petition, filed by Lamichhane’s wife Nikita Poudel on Sunday, argues that Lamichhane is being held unlawfully. A preliminary hearing was scheduled for today (Monday) before the single bench of Justice Hari Prasad Phuyal.

Gold price sets new record at Rs 191,000 per tola

The price of gold once again reached a new record high in the Nepali market. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers, the price of gold surged by Rs 1,200 per tola on Monday, reaching an all-time high of Rs 191,000 per tola.

This surpasses the previous record set on Baisakh 4, when the price had jumped by Rs 3,600, peaking at Rs 190,600 per tola. Just a day earlier, on Sunday, gold was being traded at Rs 189,800 per tola. Meanwhile, the price of silver remained unchanged. It was traded at Rs 1,960 per tola, the same as on Sunday.

CIB launches probe into suspicious transactions linked to Durga Prasai

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police has initiated an investigation into Durga Prasai, a key figure behind the March 28 pro-monarchy protest in Tinkune, Kathmandu, over suspicious financial transactions.

Acting CIB Chief Chandra Kuber Khapung stated that a formal investigation is underway after Nepal Rastra Bank flagged unusual activities in Prasai’s financial accounts and requested a probe.

Following the central bank’s request, the CIB obtained permission from the District Court to arrest Prasai and carry out further investigation.

Agitating teachers hand over man to police for disrupting protest

A man was taken into custody and handed over to police by protesting teachers on Monday, following an alleged intrusion and disruption during their demonstration. Teachers staging a protest march from Maitighar Mandala to New Baneshwor detained an individual who had reportedly entered the protest and began shouting slogans and making statements against the demonstrators.

According to witnesses, the man accused teachers—particularly those with ties to private schools—of undermining public education and using the protest to serve private interests.

Principal dies in accident while returning home from teachers’ protest

A principal returning from Kathmandu to Manang after participating in the teachers’ protest in the capital has died in an accident. Principal Man Ghale lost his life when a scooter and a microbus collided in Nepaltar, Bhanu Municipality-1, Tanahun, while he was on his way back from the protest. DSP Ashok Thapa of the District Police Office, Tanahun, confirmed the incident. Ghale was the principal of Janvikas Basic School in Nasong.

Dr. Sharma appointed Officiating Vice Chancellor of BPKIHS

Prof. Dr. Sanjib Kumar Sharma, Rector of the BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS), has been appointed as the Officiating Vice Chancellor. According to a decision made by the Prime Minister, who also serves as the Chancellor of BPKIHS, Prof. Sharma will be responsible for overseeing the institute’s daily administrative, academic, and financial operations.

Uncle and nephew go missing while bathing in Saptakoshi river

Uncle and nephew have gone missing while bathing in the Saptakoshi River. 16-year-old Janis Acharya and 40-year-old Nawaraj, residents of Itahari-16, Balgram, Sunsari, were swept away while bathing near Bastola in the Koshi River. According to the police, Nawaraj went missing while attempting to rescue his nephew Janis, who had drowned near the Barahakshetra Temple at around 8:30 am on Monday.

Foreign national rescued from Upper Mustang

A foreign national suffering from altitude sickness in Upper Mustang was rescued last night. Diego Mario Pinto, a 31-year-old Italian citizen, was rescued by an ambulance dispatched by the health unit of Lomanthang Rural Municipality after he fell ill during his visit to the region.

According to Bikash KC, Acting Chief Administrative Officer of Lomanthang Rural Municipality, Pinto was trekking in the Upper Mustang region, situated at an altitude of approximately 4,000 meters above sea level, when he began experiencing symptoms of altitude sickness, including breathing difficulties and severe headaches.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr. Arzu Rana Deuba emphasized that the Asia-Pacific region is facing a multitude of critical policy challenges during her address as Chair of the 81st session of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), held in Bangkok, Thailand, on Sunday.

In her acceptance speech, Minister Rana outlined a range of pressing issues confronting the region, including rising fiscal vulnerabilities and financial limitations, increasing trade fragmentation and protectionist trends, a deepening digital divide—especially between urban and rural communities—inadequate social protection systems, and the growing impact of climate-induced disasters.
