Judicial Council meeting taking place today

KATHMANDU: The Judicial Council (JC) is set to meet today, Sunday, amid continued delays in judge appointments and transfers, and the absence of one council member currently abroad.

Chief Justice (CJ) Prakash Man Singh Raut has called the meeting despite the absence of council member Damodar Khadka, who is on a foreign trip.

Sources say the meeting, scheduled for after 5 p.m., aims to make certain decisions in consultation with Khadka, even while he remains overseas.

Chief Justice Raut had previously attempted to push through a large-scale transfer of judges and appoint several to the High Court. However, multiple meetings ended without resolution due to a lack of consensus among council members.

Khadka is expected to return only on July 29, while Law Minister Ajay Chaurasiya had earlier requested time to review the proposals until July 30.

Currently, 27 High Court positions — including two Chief Justice posts — remain vacant.
