Govt sensitive to reducing damage from road accidents: CM Karki

MORANG: Koshi Province Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki has said that the provincial government is committed to minimizing the damage caused by road accidents.

Speaking at the inauguration of Traffic Week 2082, jointly organized in Biratnagar by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law and the Nepal Police Highway Safety and Traffic Management Office, Itahari-Sunsari, CM Karki said the government is formulating policies and providing necessary resources to traffic police to help prevent accidents.

He also instructed the Province Traffic Office to make public, starting from Shrawan 17, the actions taken so far to reduce accidents.

Emphasizing the role of public transport operators, he said, “If vehicle owners pay attention to the behavior and signals displayed by drivers, many accidents can be avoided.”

Province Minister for Internal Affairs and Law Rewati Raman Bhandari stated that road accidents, drug abuse, and suicide are among the province’s biggest challenges and will be tackled through a sustained awareness campaign.

Morang Chief District Officer Indradev Yadav, Acting Chief of the Provincial Police Office Govinda Adhikari, and DSP Santosh Shrestha of the Provincial Traffic Police urged all stakeholders to act urgently to reduce the rising toll of life and property due to traffic accidents.

As part of the week-long campaign, various awareness programs will be conducted across all 14 districts of the province.

According to the Provincial Traffic Office, 381 people have died in 5,100 road accidents in the province as of mid-June in the current fiscal year.
